Worldwide Simultaneous Poetry Reading Reaches Wales

Saturday 24 September, 1.00 pm

Shot in the Dark, City Road, Cardiff

A worldwide poetry reading, with over 450 cities in 95 countries involved, will take place on Saturday 24 September. Of the 600 events, only one of these will be in Wales, with selected poets and open mic readers performing at Shot in the Dark, City Road in Cardiff from 1.00 pm.

The Welsh poets will join others around the planet in a celebration of poetry as a vehicle to promote serious social, environmental and political change, with poetry demonstrations being organised in such political hotspots as Cairo, Kabul and Jalalabad. The Cardiff event places its focus on mental health, creativity and well-being, with an event theme – ‘the doors of perception’. The event is free to attend but any voluntary donations will go to Lapidus Cymru.

The many poets taking part include local authors Bob Rogers and Susie Wild, Somerset Maugham award winner Mark Blayney, acclaimed ‘black mountain poet’ Graham Hartill, storyteller Amanda Rackstraw, spoken word artist Liam Johnson, as well as a reading from Labi Siffre, the poet, musician and songwriter whose hits include ‘(Something Inside) So Strong’ and ‘I Got The’, the sampled rhythm track which provides the basis for Eminem’s hit single ‘My Name Is’.

This will be Siffre’s first public performance in roughly 12 years, with the star reading some of his poems, rather than the songs which have been covered or sampled by a range of artists including Madness, Olivia Newton John, Fatboy Slim and Jay-Z.

The event organisers, poets Gill Brightmore and Mab Jones, will be streaming the event live via the internet for those who are unable to attend. Click here for details.

The poems encompass mythology, the joys of the everyday and the personal inevitability of illness and grief. The More Than Human Perspective in Environmental Poetry: A Poem and Interview with Susie Wild

Interview by Zoë Brigley Welcome back to our series on writing the #MoreThanHuman. We offer a set of interviews with poets and writers on how they approach writing about the environment. The more-than-human is a phrase that seeks to side-step traditional nature-culture dualisms and draw attention to the unity of all life as a kind of shared commonwealth existing on a fragile planet. It also reminds us humans that there is more to life, that there is more world, than the human. It relocates us in relation to the mystery. This week we meet Susie Wild , author of the poetry collections Windfalls and Better Houses , the short story collection The Art of Contraception listed for the Edge Hill Prize, and the novella Arrivals . She tells us she lives in Rhondda Fach “with a TBR pile almost as high as Llanwonno”.
