West Cross Common Saved

Great news, via Rae Howells...

Amazing news on the West Cross Common campaign today! After more than a year of waiting for a decision we have finally received the minister’s letter and… WE WON! I can’t believe it!

It feels like a little ray of hope for nature (and people) in the midst of a bonkers news cycle.

The inspector’s report says the harm that would be done to wildlife, nature, the neighbourhood, the landscape, and the history of the common would not be outweighed by the development. That means the inspector and the minister agreed with us on pretty much every point, and all the hard work of the campaigners in gathering evidence, writing letters, liaising with experts, organising events and all that comes with activism, has actually paid off! I’m looking at Susan Cole Carol and Michael Crafer Laura Sheldon Penelope Ann Cridge and many others. Also none of it would have been possible without the muscle of the Gower Society and Open Spaces Society.

Also a big thanks to Parthian Books for their support of the book, This Common Uncommon, which enabled us to spread the word about West Cross Common through the book itself as well as press coverage and events across the country. Thanks to so many poets and poetry nights for giving me the mic and getting involved.

So, yay! This important and well-loved corner of Gower has been saved. Please go and have a walk over there and enjoy it
